Tempo Traveller for Rent from Bangalore to Nandi Hills – Sunrise Day Trip

Watching the sun come up over a sea of clouds at Nandi Hills has become a Bangalore rite of passage. The catch is the hour: to be at the top before dawn, your group has to leave the city in the dark, and coordinating several cars and sleepy friends at 3:30 am is nobody's idea of fun. A single tempo traveller for rent from Bangalore to Nandi Hills solves that. One driver, one pickup run, and everyone can doze until the climb begins.

Nandi Hills (Nandidurga) lies in Chikkaballapur district, north of the city beyond Kempegowda International Airport. At around 1,450 metres it is cooler than Bangalore, and on the right morning the valleys below fill with mist. This post is built as a day-trip planner: when to leave, how to handle the gates and parking, and what to add once the sunrise is done.

Distance and Drive Time

From central Bangalore, Nandi Hills is about 55–70 km. Expect 1.5 to 2.5 hours before dawn, when the roads are mostly empty, longer if you return in Sunday afternoon traffic. The route follows Bellary Road (NH 44) north past Hebbal, Yelahanka and the airport turn-off, continues towards Chikkaballapur and turns left near Karahalli Cross towards the hill. The last stretch is a winding road with hairpin bends up to the summit.

Because the trip stays within Karnataka, there is no interstate permit to think about. The highway does have a toll plaza, which will be part of your fare.

Gate Timings, Tickets and Parking

Nandi Hills is managed by the state horticulture department, and visitors pay an entry fee plus a vehicle parking charge. The gate has typically opened around 6:00 am. On weekends and holidays, crowds have been heavy enough that authorities have, at various times, introduced online booking, capped visitor numbers or temporarily stopped vehicles once parking at the top is full. These rules change, so check the current timings and entry rules a day or two before you go.

Large vehicles usually use the designated parking area. If parking is full, you may need to walk part of the way, so build that into your plan for elderly travellers.

A Sunrise Day Trip, Hour by Hour

Here is a realistic timeline for a weekend morning starting in the city centre. Shift it earlier if you are coming from Electronic City or Whitefield.

  • 3:30–4:00 am: first pickup. Collect the rest of the group on the way to Hebbal.
  • 5:00–5:30 am: reach the foothills and join the queue at the gate.
  • 6:00–6:30 am: climb to the summit and find a spot on the western and eastern edges for the sunrise.
  • 7:30 am: walk to Tipu's Drop, the Yoga Nandeeshwara temple on top and Amrita Sarovar, the old stepped pond.
  • 8:30 am: breakfast at the top or at one of the dhabas near the foothills.
  • 9:30–10:30 am: visit the Bhoga Nandeeshwara temple in Nandi village at the base.
  • 11:00 am onwards: add one or two stops from the list below, then head home before afternoon traffic builds.

Most groups are back in Bangalore by early or mid-afternoon, which leaves the rest of the weekend free.

Worth Adding After the Sunrise

Bhoga Nandeeshwara Temple

A beautifully carved Dravidian temple complex at the foot of the hill, dating back many centuries, with a large stepped tank. It is quieter than the summit and a highlight for many visitors.

Tipu's Summer Residence

A modest two-storey structure at the top, said to be where Tipu Sultan rested in the hot months. It sits close to the main viewpoints.

Devanahalli Fort

On the return journey near the airport, the old fort walls at Devanahalli mark the birthplace of Tipu Sultan.

Vineyards

The slopes around Nandi Hills have several wineries, some offering tours and tastings on weekends with advance booking. Check their visiting hours and age rules.

Muddenahalli

The birthplace of engineer Sir M. Visvesvaraya, with a small memorial, close to the hill.

Adiyogi at Chikkaballapur

The large Adiyogi statue at the Isha centre near Chikkaballapur is another popular add-on, roughly 30–40 minutes away. Check visiting times before you go.

Prefer a Trek? Skandagiri and Beyond

Skandagiri, a neighbouring hill, is known for its night trek to catch the same sunrise from a quieter summit. Treks here are regulated by the Karnataka Forest Department and generally need to be booked online in advance, with fixed slots and guides. Check the current booking process. Your tempo traveller can drop the group at the trek base and wait for you to come down.

Which Tempo Traveller to Take

For a day trip, you are not carrying much luggage, so you can size the vehicle by headcount:

  • 12-seater: nine to eleven friends or a joint family
  • 17-seater: a college batch or a group of thirteen to sixteen
  • 20 or 26-seater: office teams and residential association groups

A non-AC vehicle is usually comfortable on a cool early morning, and the open windows on the climb are part of the fun. AC helps in April and May on the return leg. Pushback seats make the pre-dawn ride much easier for people hoping to nap. See our non-AC tempo traveller article for the trade-offs.

How a Nandi Hills Quote Is Worked Out

A day trip is usually priced on a time-and-distance basis: the hours the vehicle is booked and the kilometres covered, with a minimum package. The total also depends on the seater size, AC or non-AC, the very early start (some quotes include an early-morning or night allowance for the driver), tolls and parking at the hill and other stops. Ask for these to be spelt out before you confirm.

If you extend the trip into an overnight stay in the Chikkaballapur area, ask whether XploreCabs' ₹1,500 off on eligible outstation rides applies. T&C apply.

Best Time to Visit

The famous cloud-cover sunrise is most likely from about July to February, especially just after the monsoon and in winter, when cool, humid nights create low mist. Even then it is a matter of luck. March to May mornings are clearer and warmer. Weekdays are noticeably quieter than weekends and holidays if your group can manage one.

Booking in Four Steps

  1. Pick your date and confirm the current gate timings.
  2. Send XploreCabs your headcount and all pickup points.
  3. Choose a seater and AC preference, and list the extra stops you want.
  4. Approve the itemised quote and agree the pickup time with the driver the night before.

Tips for the Early Start

  • Carry a jacket or shawl; the summit is chilly and windy before dawn.
  • Have breakfast snacks and water, since stalls may not be open at the gate.
  • Hold on to food when monkeys are around, especially near Tipu's Drop.
  • Keep to the railings at viewpoints; the drops are steep.
  • Pack out all litter, as plastic restrictions apply on the hill.
  • Agree a clear meeting time and spot at the summit so nobody holds up the group.

Catch the Sunrise Together

Nandi Hills is short, sweet and best done as a group. Tell XploreCabs your date, headcount and pickup areas, and we will arrange a tempo traveller that has you at the gate before first light.

Plan to leave between 3:30 and 4:00 am from central Bangalore so you reach the gate before it opens. Leave earlier from the south or east of the city.

What are the Nandi Hills gate timings?

The gate has typically opened around 6:00 am, but booking systems and visitor limits have been introduced at times on weekends. Check current timings and rules before you go.
