Hire Tempo Traveller from Bangalore to Mahabalipuram for a Weekend Trip
Few weekend trips from Bangalore pack as much into two days as Mahabalipuram (Mamallapuram). Here, 7th and 8th-century Pallava stone carvers turned granite boulders into temples, chariots and a carved cliff face the size of a building, right beside the Bay of Bengal. You can watch the sunrise behind the Shore Temple, cycle between monuments and still be home for Monday morning.
It is also a trip that works better as a group than in separate cars. The monuments are spread over a few kilometres, parking near them fills up on weekends, and the drive back on Sunday evening is long. Here is how to plan a tempo traveller from Bangalore to Mahabalipuram so the weekend feels relaxed rather than rushed.
Quick Facts for Planning
- Distance: about 330–370 km one way, depending on pickup point and route.
- Drive time: roughly 6–8 hours with stops, longer if traffic is heavy near Hosur or Kanchipuram.
- State border: you cross from Karnataka into Tamil Nadu at Attibele–Hosur, so an interstate permit is needed for the vehicle.
- Ideal length: two days minimum, with three days recommended if you add Kanchipuram properly.
The Route, and Why Kanchipuram Deserves a Stop
The standard way is Hosur Road (NH44) to Krishnagiri, then NH48 through Vaniyambadi, Ambur, Vellore and on toward Kanchipuram. From there, state roads via Chengalpattu and Thirukazhukundram bring you to Mamallapuram on the coast. Some drivers stay on NH48 to Sriperumbudur and come down via the Chengalpattu side or the OMR, depending on traffic. We will pick whichever is moving better on the day.
The bonus of this route is Kanchipuram. It was the Pallava capital, so its temples, especially the Kailasanathar temple, are the perfect warm-up for the carvings you will see at the coast. The town is also famous for silk saris, which tends to decide how long some groups stay. A focused stop at one temple plus a silk shop takes about 2–3 hours. Vellore Fort and the golden Sripuram temple are other possible breaks, though trying to fit everything into one day makes it very long.
If your group already has a Chennai plan in mind, we cover that city separately. This trip deliberately stays on the heritage coast south of it.
Pickups Across Bangalore
The exit is via Hosur Road, so groups in Electronic City, HSR Layout, Bommanahalli, Koramangala, BTM and Sarjapur Road start with a head start. Groups in Whitefield, KR Puram and Marathahalli can join via the outer ring road or Sarjapur–Attibele roads. North and west Bangalore groups (Hebbal, Yelahanka, Rajajinagar, Malleshwaram) should leave earlier, or meet at a central point like Silk Board, to avoid crossing the city at peak time. A Friday-night or very early Saturday start makes the most of the weekend.
What to See in Mahabalipuram
The monuments here form a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and most of them can be covered in a single well-planned day.
The headline monuments
- Shore Temple: twin granite shrines right at the water's edge, at their most atmospheric early in the morning.
- Pancha Rathas: five monolithic "chariot" temples, each carved from one rock, with life-size elephant and lion sculptures.
- Arjuna's Penance (Descent of the Ganga): an enormous open-air relief crowded with gods, animals and sages. Look for the cat mimicking a meditating sage.
- Krishna's Butter Ball: a huge boulder balanced on a slope. Everyone takes the "pushing it" photo.
- Cave temples such as Varaha and Mahishasuramardini mandapas, with some of the finest panels of the site.
- Lighthouse and the older Olakkanesvara temple on the hill, for a view across the town and sea.
The Shore Temple and Pancha Rathas are ticketed ASI monuments, and online ticketing is often available. Check current timings and ticket rules before you go, as they can change around holidays and events.
Beyond the core site
- Tiger Cave at Saluvankuppam, a few kilometres north, is quieter and set in a seaside grove.
- Madras Crocodile Bank, on the road north, is a good stop for children.
- DakshinaChitra, a living museum of South Indian homes and crafts, works well for a half day. Check its weekly closing day.
- Covelong (Kovalam, Tamil Nadu) beach, a small surfing hub where beginner lessons are sometimes available.
- The stone-carving workshops along the main road, where you can watch sculptors at work.
A Weekend Plan That Actually Fits
Saturday: Bangalore – Kanchipuram – Mamallapuram
Leave Bangalore by 5 am. Breakfast past Krishnagiri or near Ambur (also famous for its biryani, for a later meal). Spend the late morning in Kanchipuram at Kailasanathar, with a short silk-shop visit if wanted. Reach Mamallapuram by mid-afternoon, check in, rest, then walk to Arjuna's Penance and Krishna's Butter Ball in the softer late light. Dinner can be at one of the seafood places near the beach road.
Sunday: Sunrise and the stone town
Get up for sunrise at the Shore Temple, then cover the Pancha Rathas, the cave temples and the lighthouse before it gets hot. After an early lunch, visit the Crocodile Bank or the Tiger Cave on the way out, and aim to leave by 2–3 pm to reach Bangalore late evening. For a calmer version, add a Monday, or skip Kanchipuram on the way in and do it on the way home instead.
Beating the Weekend Traffic
Most of the time lost on this trip comes from congestion near the ends, not on the open highway. Hosur Road and the Electronic City flyover get jammed on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings, and the stretch around Attibele toll can back up on long weekends. On the return, Sunday evening traffic builds from Krishnagiri toward the city, and again at Silk Board for groups heading north. A few habits help:
- Leave Bangalore before 5:30 am, or the night before if the group prefers to sleep on the road and wake up near the coast.
- Start the drive home by early afternoon on Sunday, or come back on Monday morning if leave allows.
- Agree on drop points before you set off, so the driver can plan an efficient order back through the city.
- Keep meal stops to one main break each way. Large groups tend to stretch every halt by twenty minutes.
Vehicle Options for the Trip
XploreCabs offers tempo travellers in 12, 17, 20 and 26 seater configurations, with AC and non-AC choices and pushback seats on many models. Coastal Tamil Nadu is hot for much of the year, so AC is the comfortable default. A non-AC vehicle is a reasonable budget pick for December–January travel. For a small family or a group of 8–10, a 12 seater is enough. Friends' gangs and joint families are often happiest in a 17 or 20 seater, and college or office groups in a 26 seater. Have a look at our seating comparison guide if you are torn between two sizes.
Understanding the Quote
Instead of a one-line rate, we break down what goes into your fare: the vehicle and AC choice, total kilometres including detours to Kanchipuram or DakshinaChitra, your dates, highway tolls on NH44/NH48, the Tamil Nadu interstate permit, driver bata for each day, and parking at monuments and hotels. Long weekends and festival dates are busier, so booking early helps with availability. On eligible outstation rides you can also save ₹1,500 (T&C apply). Ask us to check your booking.
Best Season for Mahabalipuram
November to February is the sweet spot, with pleasant mornings, cooler evenings and comfortable monument walks. The Mamallapuram Dance Festival is usually held around December–January against the backdrop of Arjuna's Penance, and dates are announced each year, so check the current schedule. March to June is very hot, so start at sunrise and rest through midday. The northeast monsoon brings heavy rain from roughly October to December, sometimes with cyclone alerts. Watch the weather forecasts before you leave.
Steps to Book
Drop XploreCabs a message with your headcount, pickup point, dates and the stops you would like (Kanchipuram, Vellore, Crocodile Bank, DakshinaChitra). We will suggest a vehicle size, share the itemised quote, and confirm driver details before the trip.
Good to Know
- Wear comfortable footwear. Monuments involve rock surfaces, slopes and some steps, and sand gets very hot by noon.
- Carry hats, water and sunscreen. Shade is limited around the Pancha Rathas and Butter Ball.
- Temple visits in Kanchipuram need modest clothing, and footwear stays outside.
- The sea at Mamallapuram can have strong currents, so avoid swimming where it is not advised.
- Bargain politely for souvenir stone carvings, and ask about packing for the journey home.
- Keep ID handy for the group. Hotels in Tamil Nadu typically ask for it at check-in.
