Bangalore to Kanyakumari Tempo Traveller for Rent – Southern Tip Group Tour
There is a particular hush that falls over the crowd at Kanyakumari just before sunrise. People of every language stand shoulder to shoulder on the shore, facing the point where the Arabian Sea, the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean meet, waiting for the sun to clear the horizon behind the Vivekananda Rock Memorial. Reaching the southern tip of the subcontinent is something many families talk about for years. Getting there from Bangalore, though, is a serious road journey, among the longest group trips we plan. This guide is about making a Kanyakumari tempo traveller trip from Bangalore safe, realistic and enjoyable.
First, the Honest Numbers
- Distance: roughly 680–720 km one way, depending on pickup point and route.
- Driving time: about 12–14 hours of actual driving, plus breaks.
- Route: Hosur, Krishnagiri, Salem, Namakkal, Karur or Dindigul, then down the national highway past Madurai, Virudhunagar and Tirunelveli to Nagercoil and Kanyakumari.
- Permit: the trip is inside Tamil Nadu after Hosur, so a Tamil Nadu interstate permit is needed. If you add Kerala, the permit must cover Kerala too.
Because of the length, we strongly recommend splitting the journey with an overnight halt rather than driving straight through. A rested driver matters more on this route than almost any other. A driver doing 12+ hours in one stretch, then sightseeing the next morning, is not something we advise.
Who Takes This Trip
Kanyakumari groups are wonderfully varied: families on a once-in-a-lifetime South India tour, retired friends' circles from Basavanagudi or Jayanagar, Vivekananda Kendra followers, devotees of Devi Kanya Kumari, college groups on a study tour, and corporate teams looking for something beyond the usual hill resort. The common thread is that the group usually wants to travel together for several days, and that is where a tempo traveller earns its place.
Pickup Points Across Bangalore
Since the route leaves via Hosur Road, south and south-east Bangalore are the easiest pickups: Electronic City, Bommasandra, HSR Layout, Koramangala, BTM Layout, Bannerghatta Road and Sarjapur Road. North and west Bangalore groups (Yelahanka, Hebbal, Rajajinagar, Vijayanagar) can be collected via the ring road, with the first pickup timed early enough to clear the city before peak traffic.
The Places That Bring People Here
Vivekananda Rock Memorial and Thiruvalluvar Statue
Built on a rock where Swami Vivekananda is said to have meditated in 1892, the memorial is reached by a short ferry ride. The adjacent 133-foot statue of the Tamil poet-saint Thiruvalluvar is now connected to the memorial rock by a glass-floored footbridge. Ferry services depend on sea conditions and can be suspended in rough weather; check current ferry timings on arrival and go early to avoid long queues.
Bhagavathy Amman (Kumari Amman) Temple
The ancient shore temple to Devi Kanya Kumari, the virgin goddess, gives the town its name. The temple has a dress code for men and women; check current rules at the entrance. The diamond nose ring of the deity is famous in local lore.
Sunrise and Sunset Points
Kanyakumari is one of very few places in India where you can see both sunrise and sunset over the sea, and on full-moon evenings, the moonrise and sunset together. The sunset point near the beach road and the view tower are popular.
Gandhi Mandapam and Kamarajar Memorial
The Gandhi Mandapam stands where an urn of Mahatma Gandhi's ashes was kept before immersion; it is designed so that sunlight falls on a particular spot on his birthday, 2 October.
Suchindram, Padmanabhapuram and Beyond
The Thanumalayan Temple at Suchindram, around 12–15 km away, is known for its musical pillars and towering Hanuman. Padmanabhapuram Palace, about 35 km away, is a magnificent wooden palace of the former Travancore rulers; it is usually closed on Mondays, so check current timings. Vattakottai Fort on the coast, Mathur Aqueduct and Thirparappu Falls make good additions for a relaxed day.
Suggested 5-Day Group Plan
Day 1: Bangalore to an Overnight Halt
Leave early morning. Drive via Salem to a halt around Madurai or Dindigul, roughly 7–8 hours. We have separate guides for Madurai and Rameshwaram, so here Madurai is simply a comfortable rest stop with plenty of lodging options.
Day 2: Down to the Southern Tip
Continue south via Tirunelveli to Kanyakumari, around 4–5 hours. Check in, visit the Kumari Amman Temple, and watch your first sunset from the beach.
Day 3: Sunrise and the Rock
Wake early for sunrise. Take the ferry to the Vivekananda Rock Memorial and Thiruvalluvar Statue. Afternoon at Gandhi Mandapam, Kamarajar Memorial and the local market for shell crafts. Evening at leisure.
Day 4: Suchindram and Padmanabhapuram
Visit Suchindram in the morning, then Padmanabhapuram Palace, and Thirparappu Falls or Mathur Aqueduct in the afternoon. Return to Kanyakumari or move north to begin the return.
Day 5: Return Journey
Drive back with a long lunch break, or split the return with another overnight halt to make it a 6-day trip. Groups with elders should strongly consider the split.
Picking a Vehicle for a Long Haul
- 12 seater: best for families of 8–11 who want plenty of legroom over long distances.
- 17 seater: the most common choice for multi-family tours.
- 20 seater: gives breathing room for groups of 15–18 with luggage for five days.
- 26 seater: for colleges and associations, with luggage limits worth discussing.
On a trip of 1,400 km or more, AC and pushback seats are close to essential for comfort. The southern plains are warm and humid for most of the year. Non-AC can work for budget-minded younger groups travelling in winter. Our seater comparison explains how much luggage each size holds.
Costing a Multi-Day Southern Tour
Long tours are priced on actual kilometres (with a daily minimum), number of days, vehicle type, the Tamil Nadu permit (and Kerala, if added), tolls along the national highway, the driver's daily bata and night halt allowance, and parking at sights. We'll put every component in writing.
A trip of this length may well qualify for ₹1,500 off on eligible outstation rides, T&C apply. Ask our team to check for your dates.
Best Season for Kanyakumari
October to March is the most comfortable, with clearer skies for sunrise and calmer seas for the ferry. April and May are hot. The south-west monsoon (June to September) brings wind and occasional ferry suspensions, though the landscape around Nagercoil turns lush. Sabarimala season (roughly November to January) and year-end holidays fill hotels quickly, so book ahead.
Travel Tips for the Southern Tip
- Swimming at the confluence is unsafe due to strong currents; enjoy the shore from a distance.
- Keep a light jacket for windy early mornings at the sunrise point.
- Carry ID cards for hotel check-ins and some sites.
- Allow the driver a full night's rest before every long leg.
- Book rooms with an early checkout option near the beach for sunrise.
- Respect temple dress codes and photography rules.

Breaking Up the Drive Well
On a route this long, how you use the stops matters as much as the vehicle. A comfortable pattern is a breakfast halt near Krishnagiri, a tea break around Salem or Namakkal, and lunch near Karur or Dindigul before reaching the overnight stop. On Day 2, Tirunelveli makes a good lunch point, known for its halwa that many families pick up for home. Short 10–15 minute stretch breaks every two hours help elders and children, and also let the driver rest his eyes.
Plan to avoid night driving on the final stretch below Tirunelveli where possible, as the highway passes through many towns and wind-farm areas where trucks move at night. Arriving in Kanyakumari by late afternoon lets you settle in before sunset.
Sunrise Logistics
Sunrise is the moment most groups come for, and it pays to plan it like a small event. Check the sunrise time the evening before. Rooms with a sea view are popular for this reason, but the beach and the viewpoints near the shore temple fill up early, so leave your hotel 30–40 minutes before sunrise. Cloud cover can hide the sun on some mornings, especially during the monsoon months; if you have two mornings in town, you get a second chance. Keep the group together in the crowd and agree on a meeting point.
Shopping and Local Flavours
Stalls near the beach road sell shell crafts, coloured sand packets, palm-leaf items and cotton garments. Nagercoil, about 20 km away, is a larger town with better shopping and food options, including Kerala-influenced cuisine with banana chips and seafood for those who eat it. Vegetarian restaurants are plentiful in Kanyakumari itself, which suits pilgrim groups.
Health and Comfort on a Five-Day Tour
Pack a basic medical kit with motion-sickness tablets, ORS and any personal medication for the full trip plus a couple of extra days. Humidity at the coast is high, so light cotton clothing works best, with a shawl for air-conditioned vehicles and windy mornings. Keep drinking water handy in the vehicle, and plan lighter meals on long driving days.
