Bangalore to Bandipur & Masinagudi Tempo Traveller Hire for Group Safari Trips
Bandipur and Masinagudi are two halves of one of India's most important wildlife landscapes. Bandipur Tiger Reserve lies in Karnataka's Chamarajanagar district; cross the Moyar river at Kekkanahalli and you are in Tamil Nadu's Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, with the small town of Masinagudi just beyond. Together with Wayanad and Nagarahole they form part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. For a group from Bangalore, covering both on one trip means two forest departments, two safari systems and one very important rule about the clock.
That rule shapes everything else in this guide, so we will start with it.
Plan Around the Night Traffic Ban
The highway that runs through Bandipur and on into Mudumalai is closed to most traffic at night to protect wildlife crossing the road. The restriction has generally applied from 9:00 pm to 6:00 am on the forest stretches, with check-posts at both ends. Timings and exemptions have been revised in the past and could change again, so check the current timings before you travel, especially if your return is planned for a Sunday evening.
In practical terms, this means:
- Your vehicle must clear the forest section before the gates close, or wait until morning.
- A late departure from Bangalore can leave you stuck at the Melukamanahalli or Kekkanahalli check-post.
- Your return should leave Masinagudi or Bandipur with a comfortable margin, not at the last minute.
- Even in daytime, speed limits and no-stopping rules apply inside the reserve. Do not halt to photograph animals from the highway.
A professional driver familiar with this route will plan the timing for you, but it helps when the group understands why the schedule matters.
Route and Distances from Bangalore
The usual route is Bangalore → Bengaluru–Mysuru Expressway → Mysuru ring road → Nanjangud → Gundlupet → Bandipur. From Bangalore, Bandipur's safari reception is roughly 215–240 km, about 4.5 to 6 hours with a breakfast stop. Continue through the forest to Theppakadu in Mudumalai and turn off to Masinagudi, which adds roughly 20–30 km. Allow 5.5 to 7 hours from Bangalore to Masinagudi depending on traffic and check-post queues.
Groups in west and south Bangalore, such as Vijayanagar, Kengeri, RR Nagar, Jayanagar and Banashankari, reach Mysore Road fastest. Groups from Whitefield, KR Puram, Hebbal and Yelahanka should leave earlier, or gather at one meeting point near the expressway to save time.
Interstate Permit, Entry Rules and Paperwork
Bandipur is in Karnataka, but Masinagudi is in the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu. A Karnataka tourist vehicle crossing into Tamil Nadu generally needs an interstate permit or tax payment, which is normally included in the quote; ask to see it listed. Nilgiris district has also used an e-pass system for vehicles entering the district at certain times. Check current rules for the Mudumalai/Masinagudi entry before your date, and carry the e-pass if required. Forest check-posts may also inspect vehicles for plastics and alcohol, so pack accordingly.
A word on the Kalhatti ghat from Masinagudi up to Ooty: it is very steep with tight hairpins, and restrictions on certain vehicles and on non-local drivers have applied there at different times. If you were hoping to continue to Ooty, ask us first; the longer Gudalur route is often the more suitable option for a large vehicle. For a hill-station extension, our Bangalore to Ooty tempo traveller guide covers that leg separately.
Two Reserves, Two Safari Experiences
Bandipur Tiger Reserve
Bandipur's safaris are run by the Karnataka Forest Department from the reception near the highway. Options typically include shared canters (minibuses) and jeeps. The dry deciduous forest is open, making it good for elephants, gaur, spotted deer and, with luck, tigers and leopards. Seats are limited on weekends; book through the official portal or your stay and check current timings.
Mudumalai and Masinagudi
The Tamil Nadu Forest Department runs its safaris from Theppakadu, which is also home to the historic elephant camp where visitors can watch the camp elephants being fed at set times. Around Masinagudi, the scrub forest and grassland along the Moyar valley attract deer, elephants and a wide range of birds, and many resorts sit right at the forest edge. Remember that private vehicles cannot drive into the core area, and wandering off-road around Masinagudi is prohibited.
Gopalaswamy Betta
The hilltop temple within Bandipur is a popular add-on, but private vehicles have not been allowed up the hill in recent years; visitors use the official bus from the base. Confirm current access before planning it.
Suggested 3-Day Itinerary
Day 1 – Bangalore to Bandipur
- Leave Bangalore by 6:00 am, breakfast on the expressway.
- Reach Bandipur area by late morning, check in near Melukamanahalli or Mangala.
- Afternoon Karnataka Forest Department safari.
- Quiet evening at the resort; no driving through the forest after dark.
Day 2 – Cross the Moyar to Masinagudi
- Optional early safari in Bandipur.
- Drive through the reserve after 6:00 am to Theppakadu.
- Elephant camp visit and Mudumalai safari.
- Check in at Masinagudi; evening at leisure.
Day 3 – Masinagudi to Bangalore
- Morning birding walk with a resort naturalist, if offered.
- Leave by late morning to clear the forest stretch in daylight.
- Late lunch near Gundlupet or Nanjangud, home by evening.
Short on time? A two-day version can drop one reserve's safari, but trying to cover both in a single day usually leaves the group rushing against the gate timings.
Choosing Where to Stay
Where you sleep decides how much driving you do. On the Karnataka side, stays cluster around Melukamanahalli, Mangala and the Gundlupet approach, close to the Bandipur safari reception, which keeps your first afternoon simple. On the Tamil Nadu side, resorts around Masinagudi, Bokkapuram and Mavanalla sit at the foot of the Nilgiris, with views of the hills and easy access to Theppakadu. Some of these are reached by narrow village lanes or unpaved tracks, so tell us the exact property when you book; for a long 26-seater, the driver may need to park at the main road while the resort's own jeep shuttles you in. Splitting the trip with one night on each side avoids crossing the forest twice in a day and keeps the schedule comfortably inside the gate timings.
Picking the Right Vehicle
The forest highway is good tarmac, so comfort is about space. A 12-seater works for small photography groups and families of up to ten. A 17 or 20-seater suits a group of friends with bags and coolers. A 26-seater works for school, college or company groups, provided your resorts at both ends have space to park. AC is very welcome in April and May when the plains are hot; a non-AC vehicle can be fine from November to February. Pushback seats help on the early start.
What Goes into the Price
Every Bandipur–Masinagudi quote is built from the same pieces: the seater size and AC choice, total kilometres over the three days, expressway and highway tolls, the Tamil Nadu permit, driver bata per day, driver stay if your resort does not offer it, and parking. Safari tickets, camera fees and the elephant camp entry are paid separately at the forest counters. Ask XploreCabs for an itemised quote so nothing is a surprise.
As a current promotion, eligible outstation rides get ₹1,500 off; tell us you saw it here and we will check whether your trip qualifies. T&C apply.
Best Time for Bandipur and Masinagudi
From October to February the weather is mild and the forest still fairly green. March to May is hot and dry, and animals are drawn to waterholes, which can improve sightings; forest fires are a risk in this period, and parts of the reserves may be closed briefly if one breaks out. The monsoon brings rain from June onwards, making the forest dense and beautiful though sightings are harder. Safari schedules may be altered in any season, so check before you travel.
How to Book
- Secure your stays and safari slots in both reserves.
- Tell us your group size, pickup areas and which night you stay where.
- Choose a vehicle size and AC preference.
- Get the itemised quote and check permit, tolls and bata are included.
- Confirm, and share the e-pass or permit documents with the driver if required.
Practical Advice
- Never get out of the vehicle on the forest highway, even for a quick photo.
- Carry no single-use plastic into the reserves; check-posts may inspect bags.
- Book safaris early for long weekends and school holidays.
- Keep binoculars handy for the drive; elephants often appear near the road.
- Carry ID for every traveller for resort check-in and forest counters.

How far are Bandipur and Masinagudi from Bangalore?
Bandipur is roughly 215–240 km away and Masinagudi adds about 20–30 km beyond the Moyar crossing. Drive times are about 4.5–6 hours and 5.5–7 hours respectively.

The Kalhatti ghat is very steep and vehicle restrictions have applied at various times. Ask us before planning it; the Gudalur route is often better for a large vehicle.
