Bangalore to Gokarna–Murudeshwar–Jog Falls Coastal Trip
There is a small contradiction at the heart of this trip. Jog Falls is at its most dramatic in and just after the monsoon, when the Sharavathi river is full. Gokarna and Murudeshwar, on the other hand, are best enjoyed in the dry months, when the sea is calm and the beaches are open. So the first decision for any group planning all three is not the route — it is which experience matters most.
This post works through that trade-off, then lays out the loop of roughly 1,050–1,150 km that links the waterfall on the Malnad plateau with two temple-and-beach towns on the Uttara Kannada coast. Since we have separate guides for Gokarna and Murudeshwar, the focus here is on the circuit: sequencing, the ghat descent, leg timings and how to fit it all into four days.
Choosing Your Season First
August to October: waterfall-led
Jog is spectacular in this window, though in peak monsoon (July–August) mist can hide the falls entirely and heavy rain makes the coast rough. Late August to October is often the sweet spot: strong flow, better visibility, and the sea starting to settle. Beach activities may still be limited, and swimming is unsafe when the sea is rough — follow local warnings.
November to February: beach-led
The coast is at its best, with calm seas and pleasant weather. Jog will have less water — sometimes much less — and its flow also depends on releases from the upstream dam. Still worth a stop for the gorge, but set expectations.
March to May: hot and quiet
Humid on the coast and with little water at Jog. Possible, but the least rewarding season for this particular combination.
The Recommended Loop
For most groups, the best sequence is: Bangalore → Jog Falls → Murudeshwar → Gokarna → Bangalore. It visits Jog on the way down to the coast, works northward along the shoreline, and returns via a different route, so you never repeat a road.
Leg-by-Leg Breakdown
Leg 1: Bangalore to Jog Falls
About 390–420 km, typically 8–9.5 hours. The route follows NH 48 to Tumkur, then the highway via Tiptur, Arsikere, Kadur and Bhadravati to Shimoga, and on via Sagar to Jog. Shimoga is a good lunch stop. Many groups stay overnight near Jog or in Sagar rather than continuing to the coast the same day.
Leg 2: Jog Falls to Murudeshwar
About 85–100 km, around 2.5–3 hours. The road drops off the plateau through the ghats towards Honnavar on the coast, then turns south along NH 66 to Murudeshwar. The descent is scenic but has sharp bends, particularly in wet weather; the driver will take it slowly. Some groups go via Bhatkal instead depending on road conditions.
Leg 3: Murudeshwar to Gokarna
About 85–95 km, around 2–2.5 hours, north along NH 66 through Honnavar and Kumta. An easy coastal drive with river crossings and views of the estuaries.
Leg 4: Gokarna to Bangalore
About 480–520 km, typically 9.5–11 hours. One common route climbs from Kumta to Sirsi and continues east to join NH 48 near Haveri, then runs south via Davangere, Chitradurga and Tumkur. Another goes back via Honnavar, Sagar and Shimoga. The driver will choose based on road conditions — the ghat sections on either route can be slow in the monsoon.
Four-Day Plan
- Day 1: Depart Bangalore by 5:30 am, lunch in Shimoga, reach Jog by mid-afternoon. View the falls in the evening, overnight near Jog or in Sagar.
- Day 2: Morning revisit of Jog if mist cleared overnight (views often change by the hour in the monsoon), then descend to the coast. Afternoon and evening at Murudeshwar's temple and seafront.
- Day 3: Short drive to Gokarna, temple visit, and a beach afternoon. Note that the well-known beaches such as Kudle and Om are reached via narrow roads and walking paths that a tempo traveller cannot fully use — the vehicle will usually park at designated points while the group walks or takes local autos.
- Day 4: Leave Gokarna early for Bangalore, arriving by evening or night.
A 5-day version adds a second Gokarna night, or a stop at Yana or Sirsi on the return. A 3-day rush version is possible if you skip Murudeshwar's evening, but two long drives in three days is tiring.
Could You Go the Other Way?
Yes. Going Gokarna first, then Murudeshwar, then Jog on the way home has one advantage: it ends the trip on the plateau, and the Jog–Bangalore leg is shorter than Gokarna–Bangalore. The downside is that you hit Jog on the final day when everyone is tired and keen to head home. If your group's main interest is the waterfall, putting it first means you can revisit the viewpoint the next morning if mist spoils the first view.
Who This Circuit Suits
Because it mixes a waterfall, two temple towns and some of Karnataka's best-known beaches, this loop appeals to quite different groups — and each tends to shape it differently.
- College friends usually want the most beach time, so they choose the dry season, add a second night in Gokarna and keep Jog as a quick stop.
- Families with elders lean towards the temples at Murudeshwar and Gokarna and the Jog viewpoints, which need little walking. They benefit most from the five-day version and an AC vehicle.
- Photography groups often time the trip for late monsoon, when the falls are full and the ghat forests are green, accepting that beach time will be limited.
- Office teams on a long weekend like the loop because it covers a lot of variety without crossing state borders, which keeps paperwork simple.
Gathering the Group in Bangalore
The outbound route leaves the city on the Tumkur side, so the gathering point matters. North-west Bangalore — Yeshwanthpur, Peenya, Jalahalli or the Nelamangala end — gives the cleanest start. Groups in Whitefield, Electronic City or HSR Layout can either meet at one central point or use the Outer Ring Road and NICE Road to reach Tumkur Road, which adds time. Agree the order of pickups in advance so the 5:30 am departure does not turn into 7 am.
Picking the Right Vehicle
- 12-seater: the easiest size for Gokarna's narrow streets and for parking near the temple. Ideal for friend groups of 8–10.
- 17-seater: comfortable for groups of 12–15 and a common choice for college trips.
- 20 or 26-seater: works for larger groups; expect to be dropped at the edge of Gokarna's old town and at parking areas above the beaches.
- AC: helpful on the humid coast and the long return. Non-AC can work in the cooler months if your group prefers fresh air on the ghat roads; our non-AC tempo traveller guide weighs up the choice.
- Pushback seats: recommended for days 1 and 4.

Rules and Safety on the Coast and at the Falls
- Jog's viewpoints and any trails to the base of the falls are subject to local rules and seasonal closures. Check current access rules before planning to go beyond the main viewing area.
- The Arabian Sea can be dangerous during and just after the monsoon. Swimming may be restricted on several beaches; follow lifeguard flags and local warnings.
- Gokarna's Mahabaleshwar temple and Murudeshwar's temple have their own dress expectations and visiting hours. Check current guidelines before your visit.
- Water sports and boat rides at Murudeshwar depend on sea conditions and operator permissions; ask locally.
How Your Quote Is Worked Out
Every quote for this coastal loop is built from your own plan. The main inputs are the vehicle size, AC and seats; kilometres across all four legs plus local running in each town; tolls on NH 48 and NH 66; driver bata for each day and overnight halt; parking near the falls, temples and beaches; and your dates. The whole loop is within Karnataka, so there is normally no interstate permit to add.
XploreCabs currently offers ₹1,500 off on eligible outstation rides; ask whether this coastal trip qualifies. T&C apply.
Steps to Book
- Pick your season and decide whether Jog or the beaches are the priority.
- Choose the direction of the loop and the number of nights.
- Share group size and pickup points — groups near Yeshwanthpur, Peenya or Nelamangala are best placed for the Tumkur exit.
- Book stays at Jog or Sagar, Murudeshwar and Gokarna, then share locations.
- Check the itemised quote and confirm.
Packing and Practical Advice
- Waterproof bags for phones and cameras, especially in the monsoon.
- Sandals for the beaches and sturdy shoes for viewpoints.
- Cash for autos between Gokarna's beaches and for small seafront stalls.
- Sun protection, even on cloudy days at the coast.
- Patience at Jog — if mist hides the falls, wait half an hour; it often lifts.
